Leicester Service Jam
8th-9th August 2020
Friars Mill, Bath Lane, LE3 5BJ
UPDATE (17/3/20) - Leicester Service Jam and Coronavirus: Due to the latest advice from Public Health England on limiting social contact to essential meetings only, we have decided to move Leicester Service Jam to the weekend of 8th August 2020 (an official alternative date for the Global Jam). We will keep people posted of any updates should there be a venue change or any other amendments. If you have any questions please email jam@solvers.studio

What is the 'Leicester Service Jam'?
It’s a way of bringing together teams of people with all kinds of different skills and talents to rise to a challenge (think 'hackathon' using design approaches). Over just one special weekend teams develop and prototype a completely new service inspired by a shared theme.
OK, what’s the theme?
The theme is a secret known only to the team at Global Jam HQ! It won't be revealed until the first evening. You'll find out when we do!
Who gets involved in Service Jams?
It can be absolutely anyone; parents, designers, students, charity workers, business people, grandparents, public sector officers, academics, artists and a whole lot more besides. You don't need to have any experience or possess any design insights. All you need is an open mind, a passion for creating change, and a can-do mindset.
Why do people take part?
Everyone will have their own reasons. You’ll meet new people, practice or learn new skills, develop new ways of thinking (possibly), and work in new ways (probably). A Design Jam can help us all be designers through a hands-on approach. There’s no theory, no handouts, just DOING.
Oh, and it's a lot of fun! (And there will probably be pizza involved at some point.)
When is it happening?
The Leicester Service Jam will kick off at 6.30pm on Friday 20th March. During the evening you’ll meet your local innovators, form teams, and pick a starting point inspired by the (yet to be revealed) global theme. This first session will close at 9pm.
Teams will come back together again for a full day from 9.30am on Saturday 21st March, when they will throw themselves into design by getting out into the real world to discover insights and use them to start building something new. Expect this day to finish around 5pm.
On the final day, which will start from 10am on Sunday 22nd March, you will collaborate with your team to improve your prototype and share it with people in your community and the world. We’ll wrap things up by 4pm on this final day.
That’s a huge time commitment, do I have to come to all of it if I want to take part?
Yes. You’ll be designing in a small team, and teams need all hands on deck to make it through the Jam.
Where will the Leicester Service Jam take place?
The Jam will be taking place in (or very near) the city centre. Exact venue is to be confirmed. We'll send everyone who's signed up more details nearer the time. Note, we have provisionally stated that it will take place at our host's office (Solvers Studio, Friars Mill)
How much does it cost?
£8 for the whole weekend. This is to help cover admin and venue costs. We'll happily take 'in-kind' donations instead of the Jam fee (resources, cost of drinks/refreshments etc.)
We’d like Jammers to bring food to share, or for themselves, for lunch on Saturday and on Sunday.
I still have questions. How can I get in touch?
You can email us at jam@solvers.studio. If you have general queries about Jams and how they work, head over to the Global Jams' website or follow the Global Service Jam team on Twitter.
